…but is that really art?

…but is that really art?

Raw Space Galleries (near my work) has a new art exhibition in its 3 large windows each month or so. But lately, I’m starting to wonder if some of them are really allowed to be called “art”. What’s more worrying, is that these “artworks” got government grants.

Last month, the art installation was a piece of wood, some wire and a bunch of fluro’s. The installation was essentially just a giant arrow made of wood – the first window has the “end” of the arrow, the middle window had the middle of the arrow and the third window had some more of the arrow, and then the arrow’s tip. Ooookay.

This month’s “art” isn’t much better. The first one, granted, is quite good… I would call that art. But god knows what the “artist” was on for the next two windows. The middle window looks like a what a team of diarrhea-ridden people would create after eating a Beef Vindaloo. No, seriously. It looks like a deep brown substance has been sloshed on a piece of butchers paper. And that’s it. The last window has a raised platform with what looks like a small dessert or cookie of some kind resting on it. Seriously.

And, by the look of the “Queensland Government” logo (and some small writing) stuck to the side, the tax payer is paying for this. Why?!? This isn’t art. A five-year-old could have done better. Check out the images below & see for yourself. Leave your thoughts via the comments… :P
