Beyond 2000 – The Boardgame
When I was a kid, my parents owned a copy of the boardgame “Beyond 2000″ (after the Australian TV show). I was fascinated by it and remember that I’d really enjoyed playing it. Yes, it’s meant for adults, but even at the age of 9, 10 and 11 I always used to prefer hanging and chatting with adults, as opposed to other kids. Weird, but true.
Anyway, I played the Beyond 2000 boardgame a number of times with my parents & their friends at dinner parties and what not, but my parent’s no longer seem to have their copy. After seeing it on eBay, I kind-of got a craving for it again- so I bought it. After all it was only $8 or something.
We played it on the weekend with Sammy, Edz, Samson and my boy… and god it was funny. Not because of the game, but because the rules were sooo confusing and Sammy (who was in charge of reading out the rules, etc) would read out all this stuff, only to find out that, in the end… “oh, by the way – the stuff written on those cards is irrelevant – it’s just the colour that’s important” or “the rings on the top two tiers spin… but only one needs to be positioned correctly; the fact that the other one spins is irrelevant” or “okay… so, you remember how in the last round, the person before you had to ask the question… well, in this round, the person after you needs to ask it” and “the game has 4 stages… but stage 3 has two parts – parts A and B. So, now I will read the rules for stage 3, part A, sub-section III”. I guess you had to be there. But I think we all had tears in our eyes from laughing so much.
In the end, Samson – who didn’t even want to play at first, won. So there you have it. I think I won’t be allowed to play it ever again (not with those guys anyway), but I will no-doubt want to – and I did enjoy it, if I’m honest.
Here are a couple of pics, to bring back the memories… heh =)
