Reflecting back on old times…

The end of 2009 marks my 10th year in the workforce (I went straight into full-time after graduating from year 12 – didn’t see the point in uni to be honest), which got me thinking about the way things used to be. School holidays, in particular.

I remember my first year out of school – when some of my younger friends were still in high school (not to mention a boyfriend at the time). They were all planning holiday getaways & weeknight activities and I always had to say “sorry – I can’t make it – I’m working”. It’s funny to think that we used to get all of this time off during the year – 2 weeks here, 2 weeks there – 6 at the end of the year! Wow! Now I’m lucky if I get 4. Actually, I do get 4 weeks of leave a year – I just don’t use it all. But still… I remember the way I felt that first year in the workforce – I was jealous.

Everyone else was at the beach, going camping and I was at work. In an office. Working. Granted I was getting paid and they weren’t, but still. Needless to say it only took a year to sink in and then I forgot about it. Not knowing anyone that goes to school (okay, apart from my mum, who works at a school), I often forget when school holidays actually are.

The only indicators are usually: less cars on the road, emptier buses, buses that run on time (heh) and the increased number of teeny-bopper girls in the Queen Street Mall during the weekday. Yeah, you know the type – probably never seen a  penis before yet done up to the max with makeup, short skirts and wearing tight-fitting crop-tops with suggestive sayings like “Take me I’m yours”, “Sugar daddy’s welcome”, “Slut” and the like. *rolls eyes*. Lame, lol.

It must be school holidays now, because I’m seeing those skanky girls in the mall, there are less cars on the road and the busses are on time – no wait, make that early. Wow, that’s rare :D Savour the moment… hehe.

As I was going through my “To be blogged…” folder this morning (to create this morning’s Random’s post), I came across an email exchange I recently had with Brandt (one of my friends). I thought I’d post it because it too reminded me of those school days – when life was simpler :-) Enjoy… and until next time – be good!

B: We’re off to St George in a couple of weeks for my cousin’s b’day. It’s no Tamworth, it’s more bogan than that, haha. I am a little scared.

Me: Enjoy St George =) I think they have an AFL team there or something, so yes – ‘boganey’. Hehe.

B: Hahaha, I think you’re referring to St George Illawarra Dragons, and they are two-city team from down in Sydney. But props for a sport reference!!

Me: LOL – and snaps to you for knowing the correct answer, too! :-D You’re butch-er than I expected. haha.

B: Hahaha, you know how much I love my footsketball.

Me: Heh. Reminds me of when I used to play basketball as a kid – no one told me that the sides ‘swap’ after half-time! It took me a while to realise why everyone on my team was angry when I scored a ‘goal’ (??) …for the other team :P

B: LOL. Sounds like you were definitely blessed with the gift of sporting prowess. Much like myself in football whenever someone was going to tackle me – throw the ball high into the air (with no regard for where the rest of my team were) and run in the other direction. I think that’s why I didn’t make the cut in year 7, ahaha.

Me: They called me “90 Degrees” in tennis at school, because when I hit the ball with my tennis bat / racket / club, it would always go exactly 90 degrees off to one side from where I was aiming it to go.

B: Hahaha, what happened if you turned your body 90 degrees to compensate? Perhaps that is why we do not play sport :P

Hahaha, you know how much I love my footsketball.
